Networking… Cringe worthy? Does the word itself make you sweat just hearing it? It doesn’t have to be painful, intimidating or exhausting!  Meeting people does not need to be awkward and forced. Here are five easy ideas to change the networking game.

1. New Skills. Is there something you always wanted to do or try? SoulCycle, cooking classes, silk screening? In a casual class it only seems natural to strike up a conversation and meet new people. Plus, you get to learn something new + have fun in the process. Win-win.

2. Be in With the In Crowd. Who do you already know that is a master connector? Take them to coffee or lunch and pick their brain; see who they may know + who they can introduce you to. People who already know and care about you are more likely to help you connect with the right people.

3. Volunteer. Pick something you care about and give your time. It could be a charity, helping at a school or at an old age home. You will meet other people with similar interests and also get to give back which always feels solid.

4. Get the Party Started. Organize a happy hour, running club, or book club with a few friends and have them invite a few of their other friends too.  Who knows who you will meet!

5. Hello old friend. Now with social media it is that much easier to find your old high school + college friends. Go to an alumni event. Who do your old friends know? Where are they now? Are there some old co-workers you have not connected with in years?

Networking for a new job doesn’t need to be painful. Put yourself out there. Who knows, not only a new job, but a new BFF or hobby could come out of it too. Get after it, get out there, you got this. BURKE UP! We are rooting for you!
